TYPES OF HOUSEHOLD PESTS
In Pennsylvania, the life cycle from egg to adult to egg takes about three to four weeks depending on temperature and food abundance. There are multiple generations per year. The eggs are laid on the undersides of leaves of low-growing ornamentals, forest trees, roses, wheat, tobacco, soybean and numerous other plants. They take from three to five days to hatch. During the first twelve to fourteen days after hatching, the larvae use their chewing mouthparts to feed on aphids. Adults emerge several days after pupation and can live for more than one year.
Beginning about the first of October, during a sunny, warm afternoon following a cold night, the multicolored Asian lady beetles congregate outside houses, sheds, and other buildings in search of overwintering sites. The beetles are apparently attracted to the sunlight reflecting off of the south or southwest-facing sides of the building. A similar behavior is seen in their native Japan where the beetles fly to south-facing rock cliffs and outcroppings. There they enter cracks and crevices to overwinter. Females overwinter (without mating) along with the aggregate population. Mating occurs later the next spring.
Over-wintering adults leave their hibernation areas with the coming of warm spring weather. They then begin laying red eggs in crevices of boxelder bark and on the top of leaves and other objects. Eggs hatch in 11 to 14 days.
Nymphs are wingless (though they possess wing pads), darker towards their heads, and have red abdomens. They feed on leaves, fruits, and soft seeds by inserting their beaks into the tissues. They continue to feed throughout summer until they reach adulthood. Adults may emerge mid-summer, giving rise to a second generation that matures in the fall. The insect may become a problem at this time, accumulating in residential areas in search of favorable hibernation spots. These spots may include attics, cellars, and other protected area.
The clover mite is a parthenogenetic species that will overwinter in any dry protected location chiefly in the egg stage; however, it can be found in all stages. The overwintering eggs appear in the cracks and crevices of concrete sidewalks, under the bark of trees, and between the walls of buildings, and often can be found in vast numbers within these confines. The clover mite adults will become active as soon as the temperature rises above freezing. The overwintering eggs hatch early in the spring (approximately April 1, or when temperatures are greater than 45°F) and typically will complete only one generation before they aestivate (a type of warm weather hibernation) for the summer. Another generation usually is completed in the fall.
It is during the spring, however, that the mites become the greatest nuisances to homeowners. As early as mid-January, in southeastern Pennsylvania, warm weather spells can produce activity from overwintering mites. Mites located in the vicinity of buildings may climb the exterior walls and gain entrance around windows or doors. If the mites are overwintering under the building siding or within the wall voids, they may become active and enter the living areas rather than exiting to the outside.
Springtails have antennae, three pairs of legs, a segmented body and can have simple mouthparts, such as piercing-sucking mouthparts, used to suck fluids from fungi or other liquid sources to very complex mouthparts that are highly specialized for some yet unknown reason. All of the different types of mouthparts are located and concealed within the head. It is principally this later characteristic that some authors believe separates the springtails from the rest of the class Insecta.
Their most identifiable morphological characteristic is called a furcula. It is a bi-forked appendage located on the underside of the fourth abdominal segment, is folded up underneath the springtail - held in place by a clasplike structure called the tenaculum - and is snapped downward to propel the springtail through the air. Presumably, this method of locomotion is used as a means to evade predators as it can propel the springtail up to 100 times its body length.
Springtails come in a variety of colors and shapes. Most are elongated, but some species are more globular. Their colors range from white to black, and some species are purple, red, orange, grey, yellow or mottled (multicolored).
Also referred to as the bristletails (or fishmoths, tasseltails, or fringetails) because of the three, tail-like appendages that protrude from their last abdominal segment. Silverfish have silvery-metallic scales covering their body and antennae as long as their body. Silverfish can live for two to three years, or more, and produce more than 50 offspring. Eggs, deposited one to three at a time, take from 19 to 43 days to hatch (temperature dependent); these offspring can reach sexual maturity in a few months or up to 3 years. This variability is due to environmental conditions and quality of food sources.
Although firebrats do not harm humans in any way, they do cause property damage and contaminate household items in their wake. Their damage will be mostly found where they find food sources, around pantry foods, sugary and protein-rich foods, as well as paper products. Additionally, their general presence and behavior is a nuisance and disturbance to residents.
Adult European earwigs mate in late summer and early fall before establishing subterranean nests. Before oviposition, males return to the surface from mid-February to April. European earwigs exhibit one generation per year even though some females can produce two broods. The female European earwig invests high maternal care for eggs and early nymphal stages. After the eggs are laid, the female European earwig gathers the eggs together in a pile and stores them in a shallow hole, over which she stands guard. In the first batch, females lay from 30 to 55 eggs. Fewer eggs are laid in the second batch. Eggs of the first brood hatch in 70 days after being laid because of the cool spring temperatures and eggs laid in late spring or summer take only about 20 days to hatch.
The European earwig has four nymphal stages and exhibits two phases during growth: nesting and free-foraging. Adult females and first instar nymphs remain in the nests until a molt has occurred. Second instar nymphs seek food at night after females open the nest. These nymphs return during the day but some of them may not find their own nest. The third and fourth nymphal stages are represented by free-foraging organisms which live on the soil surface. The first and second broods go through the same developmental habits. By August and September both broods reach adulthood and pairing begins. This species is an omnivorous feeder and is often found feeding on plant food. If disturbed, these insects have a foul odor.
The eggs are elliptical (1.6 x 1.3 mm), light yellow to yellow-red with minute spines forming fine lines. They are attached, side-by-side, to the underside of leaves in masses of 20 to 30 eggs.
There are five nymphal instars (immature stages). They range in size from the first instar at 2.4 mm to the fifth instar that is 12 mm in length. The eyes are a deep red. The abdomen is a yellowish red in the first instar and progresses to off-white with reddish spots in the fifth instar. Protuberances are found before each of the abdominal scent glands on the dorsal surface. The legs, head and thorax are black. Spines are located on the femur, before each eye, and several on the lateral margins of the thorax.
Brown marmorated stink bugs can produce allergic reactions (rhinitis and/or conjunctivitis) in individuals who are sensitive to the bugs' odor (the defensive chemicals can be an aeroallergen). Individuals sensitive to the odors of cockroaches and lady beetles are may be particularly affected by BMSB. Additionally, if the insects are crushed or smashed against exposed skin, they can produce dermatitis at the point of contact.

BED BUG INFORMATION
They can, however, cause other public health issues, so it’s important to pay close attention to preventing and controlling bed bugs.
Experts believe the recent increase in bed bugs in the United States may be due to more travel, lack of knowledge about preventing infestations, increased resistance of bed bugs to pesticides, and ineffective pest control practices.
The good news is that there are ways to control bed bugs. Getting good, solid information is the first step in both prevention and control. While there is no chemical quick fix, there are effective strategies to control bed bugs involving both non-chemical and chemical methods.
Bed bugs can be hard to find and identify, given their small size and their habit of staying hidden. It helps to know what they look like, since the various life stages have different forms.
To find out if you have bedbugs, you need to look for two things:
Bites on your body
Signs of bedbugs
Bites on your body: If you have bedbugs, you’re likely to have bites. Bedbug bites usually cause itchy welts. These welts usually appear in a zigzag pattern as show in the photo below.
BEDBUG BITES
When bedbugs bite, you often see clusters of bites. Each cluster usually contains 3 to 5 bites that appear in a zigzag pattern. You’ll seldom see bedbugs, so many people mistakenly believe that mosquitoes, fleas, or spiders bit them. Sometimes people mistake bedbug bites for a common skin condition such as an itchy rash, hives, or chickenpox.
